  • And more…

🗣️ QUOTE

“The more clearly everyone can see your vision, the likelier you are to achieve it. Focus everyone’s energy toward one thing and amazing results will follow.”

Gino Wickman, Traction

🖼️ VISUAL

Note: I’ve been playing around with this framework for “Better Coaching." I broke it into 8 slices. Within the “Culture Slice,” I’ve broken it down into several sub-elements. Let me know what you think of it!

Culture Elements

  • Vision, Mission, Core Values

  • Co-Creation of Values/Standards

  • Align Stakeholders

  • Build Strong Relationships

  • Reinforce & Enforce Standards

A clear vision is a foundational element of every strong culture and high-performing team.

The power of a written vision just can’t be overstated.

Last year, I read Traction by Gino Wickman, and it helped me clarify my vision for RYG Athletics and the NIKE Sports Camps we provide. The clear vision was instrumental to the success of the camps last summer.

Then a few weeks ago, I had the chance to interview Brian Smith, the Head Coach for the University of Missouri’s Men’s Wrestling team, for The Better Coaching Podcast.

In our conversation, I asked Coach Smith about the written vision that he laid out in his interview 28 YEARS AGO.

You read that right.

He’s in his 29th season as the head coach of the same D1 program.

To hold a job for 28 years is uncommon for coaches at every level of sport, let alone the D1 level.

A while back, one of his administrators found the vision book he brought into his interview 28 year ago and shared it with him.

As he looked back through it, Coach Smith realized they had accomplished nearly everything that he laid out in the book, almost exactly as he had laid it out.

That’s the power of a clear vision!

See a picture of his vision book below 👇

Do you have a written vision for your team or program that is clear, compelling, and a bit audacious?

CLEAR

Is your vision crystal clear?

Can you communicate it succinctly?

When people are asked where the team or program is going, can they repeat the vision?

The clearer your vision is, the more likely it is that you and your team will bring it to life.

COMPELLING

Is your vision compelling?

Do others want to be a part of it?

A great vision taps into something deep inside us. It paints a picture of a better world or a brighter future.

AUDACIOUS

Does your vision make you a bit uncomfortable as you consider how you will achieve it?

It should be bold and audacious. Bringing your vision to life shouldn’t be easy, but it should be worth the effort.

EXAMPLES

  • RYG Athletics: Restore joy in sports one camp at a time.

  • TED: Discover and spread ideas that spark conversation, deepen understanding, and drive meaningful change.

  • NIKE: Bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world.

  • Spotify: Unlock the potential of human creativity.

  • Walmart: To be the worldwide leader in retail.

🧠 COACHING APPLICATION

A thought on how this could apply in your coaching or leadership context…

  • Take time to write down your vision for your team or program

    • Consider what you want your team or program to be like in 3, 5 or 10 years

P.S. When you do it, reply to this email and let me know what your vision is! Or if you already have one, hit reply and share it!
